Veteran Suicide

DID YOU KNOW… at least 44 veterans end their lives every day in the US? FORTY-FOUR per day!

Alarming new research shows the rate of suicide in veterans may be far worse than previously thought. A study, conducted by America’s Warrior Partnership with Duke University and the University of Alabama, called Operation Deep Dive, found:

  • at least 44 veterans end their lives every day in the U.S. That’s 2.4 times higher than the Department of Veterans Affairs’ rate of 17 deaths per day [which has since been updated to 22, making the rate 2x higher].
  • Operation Deep Dive analysis also discovered those who served in the military for less than 3 years were at greatest risk for suicide.
  • Those who served in the Coast Guard were most likely to die from suicide, followed by the Marine Corps, the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force.
  • Receiving a demotion during military service increased the risk of dying by suicide by 56%.

Regarding Virginia: The impact of suicide affects all communities in Virginia but may be felt even harder in rural areas of the state where resources for prevention, identification, and treatment are less accessible and where residents face more extreme health and economic disparities than their urban counterparts.

Warriors First Inc. seeks to serve as a bridge in rural Virginia by connecting our service members and their families to resources and care management assistance (to eventually include providing temporary housing) in order to combat veteran suicide by addressing the actual risk factors which may lead to ideation. We amplify attention and suicide prevention initiatives – prevent tragedy – by assisting our warriors with re-building structure in their lives and progressing to a better spot for themselves with connection and actionable solutions.
